First Editions- What Does First Edition Really Mean?
It may seem pointless to answer a question that seems to answer itself. What makes a first edition a first edition? Why, it is the first edition of the book to be printed of course. In truth, however, this is not always the case. It is possible for a first edition to be printed several times, in a series of "impressions". The ins and outs of dating and labelling a book as first edition, second edition, or tracing it to a particular period can be somewhat complicated to those who do not understand the process. First editions tend to be more valuable than other editions as a general rule, though this is not always the case. A second or third edition may be more valuable if the printed number was very small. This would make that edition rarer and therefore more valuable.
An edition is all copies of a book that are printed from the same set-up of type, without any major changes, regardless of when it is printed. For example, 3,000 copies of a book may be printed for the first time, then when they sell out another 3,000 copies may be printed from the same set-up. This second printing is the second impression of the first edition. Therefore, first editions can be printed many times.
In very general terms, first editions are the first time the books appear to the public. However, when a new publisher takes on a book, the first time it is printed with them is also called a first edition. This makes it possible to get a first edition printed many years after the book first appeared with a different publisher. Depending on the book and the surrounding circumstances, this type of first edition can be even more valuable than the original first edition.
The thing to remember is that while first editions are great, they are not always what they seem. There are many other factors to consider in determining value. Is it the original first edition or the second or third impression of the first edition? Which one is truly the most valuable? What condition is the book in? Is this edition with the original publisher? All of these things and more help determine value based on the individual book rather than simply whether or not the copy is a first edition.
