The correct answer to your question is: Yes you should.

But I think what you actually need to know is that Microsoft goes to great lengths to support its operating system. If you want to write software that supports other operating systems, Microsoft won't help you do that.

If you start with the Python programming language, it will help you develop skills that apply to other environments such as Iron Python which is a .NET version of Python under the Microsoft Public License which is an OSI approved open-source license. If conventional Python will do the job well enough then fine but you'll always be able to switch over if you decide to go with .NET later on.
