The Neonatal Nurse Is A Highly Trained Professional
Prenatal and neonatal infant care has long been known to be vitally important for healthy baby development. Studies have proven this fact repeatedly, and the nursing profession has responded by designating a specialty, the neonatal nurse, that focuses its efforts on the newborn.
The neonatal nurse is one who specializes in the care of the premature or critically ill newborn in order to give it the best opportunity to develop as normal as possible.
Working closely with other specialized health care professionals, the neonatal nurse is the focal point in taking care of this fragile patient population.
Neonatal nurses can be found in hospitals, clinical environments (including community care centers), and neonatal intensive care facilities. There are even neonatal nurse specialists who work in the area of medical research, or who serve as educators or consultants.
Of the three principal roles played by the neonatal nurse professional, only two remain in high demand. The first, level one care, entails caring for healthy newborns. This type of nursing is rapidly declining across the United States as more and more healthy babies now stay in the room with their mother almost from the moment they are born.
Levels two and three involve caring for babies born prematurely or with serious illnesses, and work within a neonatal intensive care unit that focuses on caring for the sickest of newborns. Of the three, the intensive care work is the most complex, as neonatal nurses working with these seriously ill children must not only continually monitor the various equipment used to stabilize these infants, but must help to instruct the parents on the best ways to care for their sick child.
Registered nurses can become certified as a neonatal nurse, or they can pursue an advanced degree as a neonatal nurse practitioner.
The education and specialized training of a neonatal nurse means they command top salaries, sometimes as high as six figures.
Large numbers of qualified neonatal nurses are in high demand due to almost forty thousand premature babies being born each year in the US alone.
Infant survivability has steadily risen over the last few decades due to the specialized teams of neonatal professionals, and the neonatal nurse. If that trend is to continue, however, the growing demand for new neonatal nurse professionals will have to be addressed.
