Speaking from personal account, having a strong dominance over my native Spanish as a language, drove me to find words of similar strength when I moved to Italy, pushing me to pursue what is considered "educated talk"; in other words, having a very "high" vocabulary (and I was only 12)
Same thing happened when I move Russia, and then again Four years ago when I moved to the States. (Though I'm still learning of course...)
I've noticed as well that immigrants (taking for instance those coming from my native land) who (some, not all) came here speaking in a very vulgar manner "translated" that way of speaking into their second language as they learned it.
