A Biogrpahy of James Joyce
James Joyce was born in Dublin on 2 February 1882, the oldest of ten surviving children; two of his siblings died of typhoid. Joyce was initially educated by the Jesuit order at Clongowes Wood College, Co.Kildare, however he was forced to leave as his father could no longer afford the fees. He then studied at home and at the Christian Brothers on North Richmond St., eventually he was offered a place at another Jesuit school, Belvedere College in the hope that he would have a vocation and join the Order. In 1898 he began studying English, French and Italian at University College Dublin. At this time he became active in theatrical and literary circles in the city, indeed his first published work was a review of Ibsen’s When We Dead Awaken in 1900, for which he received a letter of thanks from the Norwegian dramatist himself. He graduated from UCD in 1903 and left for Paris to study medicine, however he returned to Ireland within a matter of months when his mother was diagnosed with cancer. After her death, family life fell apart with little money and no stability, Joyce began drinking heavily, he scraped a living writing reviews and teaching. He left Dublin again for the Continent in 1904 with Nora Barnacle, staying in Zurich, Switzerland, Pola, Austria-Hungary (present day Croatia) and Trieste, Austria-Hungary (present-day Italy). His son Giorgio was born in 1905 and his daughter Lucia in 1907. He returned to Dublin in 1909 with a view to getting his Dubliners published and to set up a cinema. He returned again in 1912 again attempting to get Dubliners published, however it again proved fruitless, he left Ireland disgusted, he would never return again. In 1915, Joyce moved to Zurich, fleeing Austria-Hungary because of World War One; in Zurich he met Frank Budgen and Ezra Pound who influenced the writer. Pound introduced Joyce to Harriet Shaw Weaver who would become his patron relieving him of the necessity of teaching. He moved to Paris in 1920 and would stay there for the following twenty years. He returned to Zurich in 1940, following the Nazi occupation of France. He died in 1941 and is buried in Fluntern Cemetery, Zurich.

What are good books to compare to "The Dead" by James Joyce?
I need to read a book that would be good to compare to "The Dead" by James Joyce.
I will have to write an essay comparing the two books.
The book that I read must be from a Irish author!
if it's really an Irish author, try Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes.
though it would have been better if you compare
The Dead with Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
