Useful graphics related plug-ins for Adobe InDesign

Desktop publishing is sure not a trifle. Even if we put aside all that concerns creativity and marvelous design, which will make everybody see your layout and say "Wow!" there are still plenty reasons for headache. Technical problems, like quality loses on image resizing, navigating among tons of images, making graphics enhancements, replacing low-res "draft" images by high-res ones etc. can drive mad almost everyone. InDesign is sure a powerful desktop publishing software, but there is still plenty room for enhancements. Here I'd like to share some useful plug-ins, which can make work with Adobe InDesign even more convenient.

1. Label it at http://indesign.pluginsworld.com/plugins/adobe/289/knowbody-aps/knowbody-label-it.html. Even if you can memorize several tens of digits in Pi number and remember all the birthday dates of your relatives and friends, you may find this plug-in useful. If you have lots of graphics in your document, it'll show you the location paths and the file names of the images, to let you easily navigate among them.

   • System requirements: InDesign CS-CS4.

   • Price: DEMO version with limited functionality or 50 USD for 1 year licence.

2. SVG Kit for Adobe Creative Suite at http://svg.scand.com is a plug-in, which adds SVG file support to Adobe InDesign. Vector graphics can be extremely useful in desktop publishing, because it has no problems with resizing, and with the help of this plug-in you can work with SVG images in InDesign like with any other supported ones.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS3-CS5

   • Price: 99$ per license.

3. Slendro PictureLinks at http://www.slendro.com/ is a plug-in, which helps you to keep your eyes on lots of in-depth image information such as Link Name, State, File Size, Page Number, Picture Type (Raster or Vector), Image Format, Image Actual ppi, etc. by clicking on an image in an InDesign layout. Includes the ability to generate picture usage reports.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS2-CS4

   • Price: 139.77 USD per license.

4. magma Effect at http://www.roguesheep.com/labs allows image-enhancement and stylizing effects directly to any bitmap image placed into an InDesign document. However the plug-in has quite specific system requirements and is no longer supported. The reason, why I've included it here is, that it's free, so why not to try it.

   • System requirements: Mac OS X 10.4.1 (optimal on 10.4.3 and later) and Adobe InDesign CS3.

   • Price: free

5. ImageSwapper at http://www.teacupsoftware.com/products/ImageSwapper.html "Second thoughts are best." That's often right, until you need to replace low-res "preview" images in your InDesign layout by high-res ones. Reapplying all the image changes, which you've made in InDesign to high-res images makes recollect another proverb: "the work isn't going anywhere." ImageSwapper solves this problem. The plug-in will automatically calculate how much the replacement image should be rotated and scaled, while offering the option to manually override any setting.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS2-CS4

   • Price: 199 USD per license.

6. PictureXTracker at http://www.codeware.de/picturextrackerindex.php is another tool which reveal all it's potential, when one deals with tons of images. The plug-in updates the allocation between document and pictures, if it has changed, provide many opportunities for target search an do some other things.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS2-CS4

   • Price: 199 EUR per license.

7. Opi_Swapper at http://www.codeware.de/opi_swapperhome.php one more tool for juggling images. Opi_Swapper gives opportunity to administrate your high-res and low-res pictures. It provides you with the overview of picture frames in the document and the information of the document's status. With the help of the plug-in you can easily swap low-res and high-res picture data.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS2-CS4

   • Price: 99 EUR per license.

8. Casidi Live Browse at http://www.cacidi.com/downloads The more, the better, so why not to integrate an image file manager directly into InDesign. Plug-in provides you with a visual overview of your image files directly from within InDesign. The only thing, which remains to you, is to drag-and-drop.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS3 and CS4

   • Price: 125 USD per license.

9. Claro layout at http://www.elpical.com/products/claro-layout is a plug-in, which is aimed at automatic image analysis and enhancement without leaving InDesign. The tool uses it's own technology, with impressive results. There are also few more products, based on that technology at the developers site.

   • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS3 and CS4

   • Price: 799 EUR per license.

10. ImageHorn at http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/imagehorn/ is a plug-in designed to enable dynamic image fitting. With the help of it you can conveniently re-apply the selected fitting settings to an image each time you resize the frame that contains it.

    • System requirements: Both Windows and Mac OS. InDesign CS-CS4

    • Price: Free (25 USD for optional license)
